Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, passed away at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth grew up in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She left the school after just two years in order to explore a career in acting. She faced many obstacles on her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a magazine about crime, but no theatrical jobs were forthcoming. The following job she got was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and moved back to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as an actor who was steady. Earned money working during the day as an usherette. In addition, she was a drama student and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
